Project description

The Green and Intermodal Solutions Project for Adriatic Ports and Airports (ADRIGREEN) is implemented within the Interreg V-A Italy-Croatia transnational cooperation program 2014-2020.

The European Regional Development Fund finances the program under the European Territorial Cooperation objective during the programming period 2014-2020. The Veneto Region, Italy, is the

Managing Authority of the Cooperation Programme. The Ministry of Regional Development and European Union Funds is the National Authority in the Republic of Croatia that coordinates the implementation of the Programme with the other participating countries.

The project started in January 2019 and is expected to be completed by January 2021.

The total approved budget of the project is EUR 2,104,217.00, of which 85% is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund. Ten project partners will implement the project.

Project description:

The Adriatic coast is severely affected by the imbalance in the development of infrastructure and transport modes caused by insufficient investment and lack of innovation. Numerous maritime cities in Croatia and Italy have to cope with many passengers, especially during the high season. Although road transport still dominates, more and more passengers arrive on the Adriatic coast by ferry and plane every year.

However, as Adriatic ports and airports are insufficiently integrated with other modes of transport, major traffic jams occur during the summer months.

ADRIGREEN aims to improve the integration of Croatian and Italian ports and airports with other modes of transport, increasing passenger flows in the summer months and reducing the environmental impact of maritime and air systems.

The project aims to improve intermodal connections between ports and airports with alternative modes of transport by testing various operational intermodal and technological solutions. By identifying and analyzing existing procedures, the project partners will test several intermodal practices to assess whether they can be adapted and transferred to the relevant program area.

The project will provide the following main results:

  • finding adequate solutions for reducing the environmental impact of ports/airports as well as improving intermodal connections between ports and airports with other modes of transport
  • detailed analysis of the impact on the environment of the ports/airports involved
  • realization of 2 joint action plans namely 1) for intermodal passenger transport from/to ports and airports and 2) sustainable management of ports and airports
  • testing 6 new smart solutions in the area of Pula, Dubrovnik, Rimini, Ancona, Pescara and Bari
  • technical manual of the identified practices

Cross-border forum of green and intermodal ports and airports with the aim of presenting solutions, clarifying advantages and sharing advice for new strategies.

The initial meeting of project partners was held in Pula on February 5-6, 2019. During the project's life, four additional meetings and one cross-border forum are expected to be held.

We hope that, in addition to the above-mentioned project objectives, the project will contribute to future cooperation between the participating project partner countries and a better understanding of issues related to air transport and maritime connectivity.
